SS ANDREA DORIA - SS STOCKHOLM Collision. The SS ANDREA DORIA lists sharply to starboard as she begins sinking, with the sea creeping up over the deck rail. A lifeboat drifts aimlessly off her bow without occupants. Tragedy stuck the 656-foot 29,082-ton luxury liner from Genoa, Italy when she collided with the SS STOCKHOLM, a 510-ft., 12,644-ton passenger liner from Stockholm, Sweden, in a fog 205 miles east of New York, 55 miles south of Nantucket Island, on July 26, 1956.

USS Wakefield (AP-21), Rebuilt by Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. This item is a photograph depicting the troop transport USS Wakefield (AP-21) after being completely rebuilt by Boston Navy Yard. Originally constructed as the ocean liner SS Manhattan, Wakefield was chartered for troop transport by the U.S. Government on June 6, 1941 and was commissioned as a naval transport ship on June 15, 1941. She operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres during World War II, participating in transport convoys and often acting as a "lone wolf," relying upon her superior speed to evade enemy submarines. A rapidly spreading fire that broke out deep within the bowels of the ship on the evening of September 3, 1942 necessitated her complete rebuild in Boston, after which she was recommissioned on February 10, 1944. The Empress of Ireland about to set sail for Liverpool. The passenger liner sank on the 29th May 1914, while sailing down the St. Lawrence river in dense fog and colliding with the collier, Storstad. Captain Kendall sent a wireless telegram to Captain Walsh the C.P.R 's marine superintendent saying, 'Empress of Ireland. stopped dense fog, struck amidships vital spot by collier Storstad.' Over 1000 people died in the disaster, only 500 less than the Titanic. 1914

SS ANDREA DORIA - SS STOCKHOLM Collision. A view from port side of the great hulk of the 656-ft. Italian passenger liner SS ANDREA DORIA sinking in sharp list to starboard after colliding with the Swedish liner SS STOCKHOLM in fog about 205 miles east of New York, 55 miles south of Nantucket Island, on July 25, 1956. The ANDREA DORIA carried 1,000 passengers and 500 crew members. Participants in the rescue included the SS CAPE ANN, SS ILE de FRANCE, U.S. Coast Guard cutters, seaplanes, and helicopters, and U.S. Air Force helicopters.

Largest Post-War Liner Launched -- The shipyard workers of Vickers-Armstrong watch the result of months of their labour as the new liner Orcades slides into the water following the launching at Barrow-in-Furness today (Tuesday).The 31,000-ton liner Orcades, built for the Orient line by Vickers-Armstrong Limited, and which is the biggest merchant ship to be launched in any country since the end of the war, successfully went down the slipways at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs, today (Tuesday). The launching ceremony was performed by Lady Morshead, wife of Lieut-Gen. Sir Leslie Morshead, manager of the Orient Line. The Orcades is intended for the Australian run, and will carry 1,560 passengers with cargo and mail. October 14, 1947.
