Parisian Traffic, Spring 1945- Everyday Life in Paris, France, 1945 A Velo taxi at work in Paris. According to the original caption, this is a home-made bicycle taxi, 'with its cellophane windscreen, makeshift hood, two old bicycle wheels and wooden box body', although there are also many factory-made versions in circulation. The fare for a trip in a Velo taxi is about 400 francs or GBP2 per mile, roughly equivalent to a motor taxi: 'Motor taxi drivers, reproached for high charges, answer that they have to buy their petrol on the black market, Velo taxi riders say that they have to buy their food there too'.
