Below is a body of silk and a white skirt from muslin, including a blue side skirt. Accessories: Hat with ribbon, shoes with bows. The boy is dressed in a widening edgeote of Laeken. Here he wears a silk sailor suit consisting of a vest and long pants. Accessories: Hat with feather, around the agent a sash with fringes, shoes with bows. A bird and a flower in the right hand. The print is part of the 23rd Cahier from Cabinet des Modes Ou Les Modes Nouvelles. The series consists of 72 fashion prints, issued by Buisson, Paris, November 15, 1785 - November 1, 1786.

Modern Oddities, by P. Pry Esq., Plate 1st: The Sleeves Curiously Cut, Ay There's the Villainy - vide Shakespeare June 30, 1829 William Heath ('Paul Pry') British During the second quarter of the nineteenth century womens fashions in Britain shifted away from a Neoclassical silhouette. Tightly corseted bodices returned and were accentuated with exaggerated puffed sleeves and full round skirts ending above the ankles to display feet in flat slippers. Heads were adorned with “salad plate hats”, wide-brimmed and decorated with ribbons and feathers. Heath worked with the publisher Thomas McLean to create a series of popular etchings that exaggerated aspects of the new style to the point of absurdity. For titles, he often borrowed quotations from Shakespeare; this one is derived from a scene in The Taming of the Shrew (4.3.143). From 1827-29 Heath used the image of a little dandy holding an umbrella to sign prints, seen here at lower left, a reference to Paul Pry, a nosy character in an 18

On the Beach at Long Branch Winslow Homer (American, 1836-1910). , 1870. Wood engraving, Sheet: 8 15/16 x 13 3/4 in. (22.7 x 34.9 cm). Driving in an open coach was a popular leisure activity at seaside resorts. Such drives were a daily form of social ritual, offering both the carriage and its occupants as objects for display. Homers radically cropped composition reduces the coach (and the liveried male driver) to a framework for a trio of well-dressed beauties. The artists emphasis on details of their dress, coiffeur, and accessories approaches the conventional fashion plate in this illustration, which has no accompanying text. Nevertheless, Homer captures our imagination and suggests a narrative with the elaborate costumes and lively conversation among the young women, oblivious to the ocean view beyond and the surf beneath the wheels.
