Two Yankee Doughboys Fall in Invasion of Riviera. Charging ashore from the mighty American invasion fleet that crashed into Southern France, these two doughboys were killed attacking a German dugout on the beach. This picture, made by a Coast Guard combat photographer landing with the invaders, shows the two invaders lying where they fell as their comrades went on to secure the beachhead and drive the enemy inland. Ships go on unloading in the distance as the dead await the coming of the litter bearers.

American Dead Removed From Wakde Island. Greeted by heavy machine gun fire and snipers' bullets from foxholes back from the beach, American invaders met bitter opposition in the invasion of Wakde Island off the north Dutch New Guinea coast on May 18. Here, some of the American dead are moved in litters to a Coast Guard-manned LCM (Landing Craft Medium) for transfer to the mainland for burial. The LCM is in the extreme right foreground in front of the open bow of a Coast Guard-manned LST (Landing Ship Tank), one of 12 participating in the invasion.

Coast Guard-manned LST Makes Rail Connection on Coast. Looking down from the deck of a Coast Guard-manned LST, Coast Guardsmen can see a land track stretching forth from the bomb-torn French coast to make connection with the track-equipped tank landing ship. When the union is completed, freight cars ferried from England will roll easily onto the shore, ready for use on the Army Transportation Corps' vast rail network which supplies Allied armies on the Western Front.

Storming the beaches of the Marianas island from Coast Guard-manned landing barges, American invaders ran against a withering fire from Jap guns hidden behind the natural ramparts behind the sandy shore. Casualties were heavy in smashing the enemy's first defenses near Charon-Kanoa.
