The concept of the house in Tokyo adresses the paradoxical quality of Tokyo being a metropolis and a village at the same time . Grown around the empty void of the imperial palace, the city is organized as a ring of railway crossings. The site is a direct reflection of this quality. The essence of the design is the stacking of different 'Atmosphere units' with specific individual character that are directly reflective of their immediate environment. The basis is a 2-storey detached house with a small garden, consisting of kitchen, living room, bedroom and bath. This house covers the site from front to back, leaving a narrow strip open: the rooms are consequently opened towards this small garden. The house is closed to the 'Street'.
