Wooded Landscape with Cows beside a Pool, Figures and Cottage 1775-80 Thomas Gainsborough British Pairs of creatures punctuate the moonlit landscape, arranged as if to illustrate the progress of love: at the left, two cattle nestle together; in the center, a human couple reclines companionably on a log; and at the right, a standing figure leans pensively against a staff, accompanied by a loyal hound. The apparently simple scene-probably made in the later 1770s, given its refined drawing style-was hard-won. Gainsborough completed this soft-ground etching using a variety of techniques: he strengthened lines in the foliage with an engraver's sharp burin; formed the smooth light areas in the sky with aquatint; and preserved the white color of the paper on the cow's back by stopping-out. Yet, despite such virtuoso passages, Gainsborough eschewed technical perfection and simply ignored the defects on his copper printing plate that created the lateral lines resembling creases in the sheet.. Date: 1750-80.This landscape and the three others (nos. 17.97.17, 80.3.292, and 37.165.108) are typical examples of the work of the forger or forgers of drawings by Guercino - especially of landscapes - who were presumably at work in Italy in the second half of the eighteenth century. All four are executed in a thick, pasty, dark red-brown ink that is the mark of such forgeries. Such drawings are sometimes direct copies after drawings by Guercino or facsimile reproductions thereof, but the four landscapes here seem rather to be pastiches, composite compositions utilizing motifs borrowed here and there from Guercino's landscapes. Landscape with wind and rain., Franciscus Milatz, artist, 1784-1808, Netherlands, etching, Franciscus Andreas Milatz (1763-1808) was a landscape and city painter, draughtsman and printmaker who spent most of his life in Haarlem. Together with his near contemporary Hermanus Fock - who is currently represented in three etchings in Te Papa's collection - Milatz became one of the leading lights in the Haarlem school of landscape artists which was at its most active around 1800. These artists took their inspiration from their 17th-century predecessors, in particular Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema, and also, like those artists, from the actual landscape in the immediate surroundings of Haarlem.

Date: ca. 1790-99.This drawing is a most impressive example of Mechau's mature style and can be dated to the end of the eighteenth century, when the artist's compositions were moving away from the influence of Claude Lorrain, who generally treated the human element in his landscapes as mere staffage. Here, the towering trees are given no greater importance than the scene depicted underneath. The subject of the drawing is explained by a 1785 poem by the German poet and philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803), inscribed on the back of the sheet, probably in the artist's own hand. A cowardly Phrygian soldier, who only dares to threaten the Trojan hero Ajax when he is dead and buried, jumps backward when Ajax shouts to him from his grave.
