Just one of the small figures is illuminated, a man who turns away from the looming giants. Is he retreating, or is he showing them his rear' As is the case with the other plates in Goyas series, called 'Los Proverbios' or 'Disperates' Follies, this image is difficult to pin down.

The Fall of Babylon, from Illustrations of the Bible 1835 England. The visionary Romantic painter John Martinís Illustrations of the Bible (1831ñ35) boasts some of the most dramatic mezzotints of the 19th century. This series enthusiastically embraced J. M. W. Turnerís ìhistoricalî category from the Liber Studiorum (1807ñ1819). Yet ìMadî Martin eschewed Turnerís sepia tonality for a deep, velvet black periodically ripped asunder by lightning bolts. He engraved over 100 mezzotints, with special attention paid to the light and dark contrasts of Old Testament miracles and disasters. Although the series remained unfinished, his taste for elaborate destruction was sometimes well remunerated when his gigantic oil painting Belshazzarís Feast (1821; private collection) was put on view soon after being made, it attracted 50,000 paying viewers.. Plate 26 from 'The Disasters of War' (Los Desastres de la Guerra): 'One can't look.' (No se puede mirar.) 1810 (published 1863) Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish After Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1807 and 1808 brought about the abdication of the Spanish king, violent protests against the French erupted in Madrid. The uprising of May 2, 1808, marked the start of the armed Spanish resistance, which dragged on in guerrilla warfare until 1814. During the war, Goya documented his horror and outrage at the atrocities committed by soldiers and patriots in his series of 80 prints 'The Disasters of War'. Never before had a story of man's inhumanity been told so compellingly, every episode reported with compassion, honesty and respect for the victims. Not until 1863, thirty-five years after Goya's death, was the first of seven posthumous editions of the Disasters published by Spain's Royal Academy, which in 1862 purchased all eighty etched copperplates..
