Portrait of a Woman (Judith Colman Bulfinch), c. 1734. John Smibert (American, 1688-1751). The appearance of a professionally trained British painter in the American colonies in 1729 marks a curcial point in the history of American art. Smibert not only imported the skills necessary to convey the impression of substantial, rounded forms in a picture, but his commercial success also inspired others to contemplate careers as painters. Born in Edinburgh and schooled in London and Italy, Smibert attracted numerous clients upon his arrival in Boston. The low bodice, long neck, and sinuous curl of hair in this portrait follow British conventions for depicting women. Research continues as to the identity of the sitter, long thought to be Mrs. Thomas Bulfinch (born Judith Colman, 1707-1765), since that name does not appear in Smibert's recently discovered records.

At the age of 25, Rembrandt moved from his hometown of Leiden to the bustling city of Amsterdam. Within a few years he had become one of the citys most successful portrait painters, creating remarkably vivid likenesses that seemed to express the personality and soul of the sitter. Here, Rembrandt used smooth, fluid brushstrokes to recreate the soft texture of the womans skin. In contrast, thicker, more textured strokes draw attention to the lavish display of her lace collar and gold jewelry—details sure to please a wealthy client. The extraordinary demand at that time for a portrait by Rembrandt meant that in many cases (including, probably, this painting) he called upon assistants to help complete the work.

Vestal Virgin” comes from a category of women in ancient Rome who devoted themselves to Vesta, goddess of the hearth (alluded to here in the brazier on which offerings might be made). This guise was well-suited to women who were unmarried or about to marry. This unknown sitter’s gold-trimmed robe is not contemporary dress but a historicizing costume; her pose, unveiling herself, is typical of the simultaneously chaste and alluring nature of this particular disguise..
