Portrait of Marthe Marie Tronchin 1758-1761 Switzerland. An admirer of Rosalba Carriera, Liotard evolved a highly personal, realist style that was not well received by the Academicians in Paris, but was welcomed in England, Holland, and his native Geneva. This portrait was made at the height of Liotardís career in Geneva, during a period (c. 1757-63) in which he portrayed the most politically and intellectually vital individuals in that city. Liotard depicted no less than eight members of the Tronchin family, one of the most important and influential dynasties of the Swiss Republic.. Pastel on vellum . Jean Etienne Liotard

Mrs John Clerk Maxwell (neé Frances Cay) and her Son James, 1833. By William Dyce.. From PreRaphaelites.org:. The child's informal pose and lively expression owe much to the influence of the artist of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-92) upon Dyce early in his career. Mrs Clerk Maxwell seems only just to succeed in holding the child in check. In adult life James Clerk Maxwell was one of the outstanding British physicists of the nineteenth century, becoming first holder of the Chair of Experimental Physics at Cambridge in 1871. At various stages in its history, the painting has become known as 'James Clerk Maxwell,' and as 'A Small Boy, with his Mother,' a title which consigned the famous physicist's mother to anonymity. Mrs Maxwell was the sister of Robert Dundas Cay and Jane Cay for whom the picture was painted. The Cays were relatives of the artist through Robert's marriage to Dyce's sister Isabelle. A letter and receipt from the artist dated 21 March 1833 is in the object file at Birmingha

The Empress Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo, 1826-1920, Condesa de Teba) 1854 Franz Xaver Winterhalter German Winterhalter began an official portrait of Empress Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo, Condesa de Teba, 1826-1920) shortly after her marriage in 1853 to Napoleon III, emperor of France, but it was not exhibited until 1855. The present work is, in contrast, relatively intimate in scale and effect. It shows the empress in a Second Empire adaptation of an eighteenth-century gown. Her interest in the previous century, especially her fascination with Marie Antoinette, queen of France from 1774 to 1793, is well documented.. The Empress Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo, 1826-1920, Condesa de Teba). Franz Xaver Winterhalter (German, Menzenschwand 1805-1873 Frankfurt). 1854. Oil on canvas. Paintings

The early 1900s caption reads: "Portrait of Madame Mole-Raymond in the Louvre. This famous painting of Madame Mole-Raymond, the pretty actress of the Comedie Francaise, is one of Vigee Le Brun's masterpieces. Her brush is now at its most dextrous use; the laughing pretty woman is caught like a live thing and fixed upon the canvas as at a stroke as she trips across the vision, with muff upraised, smiling out upon us as she passes. Vigee Le brun never started character with more consummate skill than here; never set down action with more vivid brush, catching movement flying.".

Portrait of a Woman Attributed to Bartolomeo Traballesi (Italian, Florentine School, active by 1560, died 1585). Portrait of a Woman, ca. 1570-1575. Oil on panel, 34 7/8 x 25 1/2in. (88.6 x 64.8cm). This Florentine portrait is an outstanding example of Italian Mannerist painting, a Late Renaissance style defined by complex compositions, vivid colors, and unnaturally elongated figures. Here, Bartolomeo Traballesi emphasizes his sitters grace and refinement by artificially sloping her shoulders and lengthening her neck and fingers. Also typical of Mannerist portraiture are the models trappings of status and erudition: a Turkish carpet of a type then popular at the Medici court and a book of poetry. Traballesis portrait, last on view in 1956, was recently treated in the Museums conservation lab for this presentation. European Art ca. 1570-1575

Portrait of a Woman (Marianna Panciatichi, marchesa Paolucci delle Roncole, 1835-1919, or her sister-in-law, Beatrice Ferrari-Corbelli di Reggio, contessa di Lucciano). Artist: Michele Gordigiani (Italian, Florence 1835-1909 Florence). Dimensions: 25 3/16 x 20 1/2 in. (64 x 52 cm). Date: 1864.Gordigiani was the premier portraitist of the Risorgimento, the period of modern Italian unification. This portrait, commissioned by marchese Ferdinando Panciatichi (1813-1897), scion of a distinguished Florentine family, depicts the patron's daughter or daughter-in-law. That it was one of a pair--the pendant is now unlocated--can be deduced from the original receipt for the exuberant gilt wood frame with silk velvet elements the painting still bears, a masterpiece of the intagliatore, or carver, Niccola Ricci (active 1848-1866). The frame's opulence is evocative of the years 1864-71, during which Florence served as King Vittorio Emanuele II's temporary capitol. Museum: Metropolitan Museum
