This portrait of Edouard Gautier DíAgoty attests to the successful self-promotion of his father, the printmaker Jacques Gautier DíAgoty, who added the more refined surname DíAgoty late in his career. The text on the ledge incorrectly notes that the sitter, Gautier DíAgotyís third son, had invented the color mezzotint medium, when in actuality it was the elder Gautier DíAgoty who had learned the process from Jacob Christoph Le Blon. Gautier DíAgoty nevertheless justified his own role in the development of color mezzotints in the introduction to every publication after being granted control of the process by King Louis XV in 1742.. The embodiment of Romantic terror, he may very well have seen a ghost or encountered other scientifically inexplicable horrors. Backed against an unforgiving and ancient stone wall, he suggests a tragic hero like the one in the first Gothic novel, Horace Walpoleís soon-to-be published Castle of Otranto. Joseph Wright of Derby copied some of Fryeís heads for his Experiment with the Air Pump; this frightened youth could have inspired the wild-haired philosopher at center stage..
