Matthew Boulton was one of the leading entrepreneurs and visionaries of the eighteenth century. In partnership with James Watt, in 1775, he launched into the development and industrial application of the steam engine. In 1761 he began building his Soho Manufactory, where he pioneered revolutionary techniques of production. He also established the first steam-driven coin mint in the world.

John Haviland. Artist: John Neagle (1796-1865). Dimensions: 33 x 26 in. (83.8 x 66 cm). Date: 1828.The ingenious British architect John Haviland (1792 - 1852) sat for his contemporary John Neagle, while at work on the building that would make him famous. Haviland's Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia (1823-29), one of the largest architectural projects yet undertaken in the United States, was hailed as revolutionary and epochal. In this portrait, Haviland appears to be checking with calipers his innovative scheme of cells radiating from a central core; his plan would later influence prison design internationally. The watercolor rendering at right shows the neo-Gothic facade of the prison, while the book--a volume of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett's "The Antiquities of Athens" (1762-1816)--betrays his eclectic stylistic interests. Haviland later designed the Hall of Justice in New York (fondly called "The Tombs") and was a founder of the American Institute of Architects. Museu

John Vinall John Mason Furness (American, 1763-1804). John Vinall, ca. 1792. Oil on canvas, 49 5/16 x 39 7/16 in. (125.2 x 100.2 cm). A somewhat mysterious figure whose artistic reputation rests on this single impressive work, John Mason Furness began his artistic career during the 1780s as an engraver in Boston. By 1785, he took up residence, presumably as a painter, in the studio formerly occupied by the famous John Smibert. In light of his substantial skills as a draftsman and engraver, Furness was particularly well suited to paint the respected Boston schoolmaster and cartographer John Vinall (1736 1823). In this striking, crisply drawn, and informal yet imposing portrait, Vinall is shown seated beside a table, on which are displayed his case of drafting implements, a compass, and an unfinished map. Date: 1821.The English-born Philadelphian Thomas Sully painted this self-portrait for his host in Baltimore, Maryland, the broker Henry Robinson. The artist is shown interrupted at his work, with the primary tool of his profession pointed at his sharply lit head. This paintbrush device is common in artists' self-portraits, and Sully is thought to have adapted it from a similar work by Benjamin West, with whom he had studied in London. Although Sully's brushwork is unusually restrained here, its painterly quickness blends with the engaging spontaneity of the pose to create a sense of immediacy.
