King's declaration after Great Fire of London 1666 Document: King Charles IIs declaration to London 'upon occasion of the late calamity of the lamentable fire' in 1666 (SP 29/171) Description: Early Sunday morning on the 2nd of September 1666, a fire started spreading in Pudding Lane in London. By Monday, 300 houses had burned down and people were in a panic. London Bridge and St Pauls Cathedral were both burnt. On Tuesday, King Charles II ordered that houses and shops be pulled down to stop the fire from spreading. By Wednesday, they had the fire under control. By then, 100,000 people were homeless. This document shows the front cover of a printed version of King Charles II's declaration after the fire. Inside, he praised the courage of the citizens, and wrote that he hoped to see a more beautiful city rebuilt. He also made plans hoping to prevent another fire.
