Of One Heart. Cornelis Kruseman was sometimes called Italian Kruseman’ owing to his love for Italian art. After spending time in Rome (1821-1825), he worked in the Netherlands in the idealized style that he knew from Italy. This trio of young musicians in folk costume is a fine example of this. In contrast to Piety, also in this gallery, by the time Kruseman painted Of One Heart, he had virtually abandoned Dutch realism.

Rebecca and the Wounded Ivanhoe 1823 Eugène Delacroix This was Delacroixs first treatment of a subject drawn from Sir Walter Scotts popular novels of medieval chivalry. The eponymous hero of Ivanhoe (1819), straining to leave his sickbed, listens to the terrified Rebecca as she describes a battle raging outside the window. Rather than show the battle itself, Delacroix sought to stimulate the viewers imagination by evoking violence through the gestures of the characters reacting to it. The fastidious execution of Rebeccas extended hand stands in contrast to the jumble of strokes immediately surrounding it and to its left, which suggest the frenzy she witnesses.. Family Group near a Harpsichord. Troost was a master of the informal group portrait. It is as if everyone had momentarily stopped what he or she was doing to look up as the artist entered.
