John Jay was New York City lawyer in 1775, when the first battles of the American Revolution were fought. He joined the New York Committee of Correspondence, and was a delegate to the First Continential Congress. He advocated for ratification of the Federal Constitution with five essays in the Federalist Papers. Jay was a negotiator of the Treaty of Paris, 1783. In 1795, the treaty he negotiated with Britain was unpopular in US, but delayed war for several years (BSLOC_2019_4_160)

Although George Pitt reputedly led a life of debauchery and was a cruel husband, Thomas Gainsboroughs portrait endows him with an aura of dignity and refinement. This work was painted between Pitts appointments as ambassador to Turin, Italy, and Madrid, Spain, but he is very much the English gentleman at home on his country estate. Gainsborough balances the deep scarlet and green facing of Pitts military uniform with the cool, woodland landscape painted with wide, liquid brushstrokes of mauves, grays, and silvers.

After the American Revolution, Thaddeus Kosciuszko returned to Europe, He became General in Chief of the PolishLithuanian army fighting against Russian occupation following the Second Partition of Poland in 1793. After the 'Kosciuszko Uprising' failed in Nov. 1794, Kosciuszko was imprisoned by the Russians at Saint Petersburg's Peter and Paul Fortress. In 1796, he was pardoned by Tsar Paul I, and emigrated to the United States (BSLOC_2019_4_21)

Portrait of Louis XVIII, 1822. Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin (French, 1759-1832). Enamel in a stamped gilt metal mount; framed: 7.7 x 6.8 cm (3 1/16 x 2 11/16 in.); sight: 4.9 x 3.9 cm (1 15/16 x 1 9/16 in.). As the official miniaturist for the French court of Louis XVIII, Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin produced portraits of many elite personalities. This miniature features Louis Stanislas Xavier, King Louis XVIII, in military costume. Taking the throne after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis ruled from 1814 to 1824, except for a brief period in 1815 when Napoleon escaped from exile and regained power. This type of official portrait in miniature was useful as a diplomatic gift and was probably commissioned in large numbers. In fact, there are two versions of this miniature in the museum's collection, one in watercolor on ivory and this one in enamel. Here, Louis wears the blue ribbon and the silver star of the Order of the Holy Ghost, the star and the cross of Our Lady of Mount C

Date: ca. 1777.An artist, inventor, scientist, author, and museum founder, Peale was an accomplished portraitist in oil and watercolor on ivory; the latter skill he honed while studying in London during the late 1760s. Among his claims to greatest fame were his many portraits of George Washington, who sat for him in 1779, when Washington was at the height of his powers as the leader of the American Revolutionary forces. Peale painted a monumental portrait for the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, and then proceeded to execute many replicas, in full-length, half-length, and miniature.
