This painting of Franz Hals and his wife was done by Franz Hals (1580-1666), a member of thr Diutch School of Haarlem, It is in the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam. Frans Hals the Elder was a Dutch Golden Age painter, chiefly of individual and group portraits and of genre works, who lived and worked in Haarlem. Hals played an important role in the evolution of 17th-century group portraiture. He is known for his loose painterly brushwork.

The Poorly Defended Rose, 1789, Michel Garnier, French, 1753 - 1819, 18 3/16 x 14 13/16 in. (46.2 x 37.62 cm) (canvas)25 x 22 in. (63.5 x 55.88 cm) (outer frame), Oil on canvas, France, 18th century, The Poorly Defended Rose is supposedly a scene of seduction. Yet the woman's raised hand and expression of dismay at the man's advances calls that narrative into question. 'The plucked rose and broken pitcher both symbolize the womans 'de-flowering.' One might think that the intruder is in the wrong, yet Garniers title for the painting blames the woman for not adequately protecting her own virtue. Garnier might have set out to paint a frivolous moralizing tale about a 'fallen' woman, but imagine how a female painter might have pictured the encounter differently. What social or economic realities might Garniers highly polished style have glossed over' Today, in the age of #MeToo and open conversations about sexual consent, the encounter takes on a different light.

Everhard Jabach (1618-1695), dressed in black, is seated in the company of his wife and their four children. Although Le Brun presents an arresting portrayal of each sitter, much of the composition is given over to Jabach and the emblems of his cultural interests and, through the artists reflection seen as a self-portrait in the mirror, his association with Frances leading painter. The Van Moerkerken Family. Artist: Gerard ter Borch the Younger (Dutch, Zwolle 1617-1681 Deventer). Dimensions: 16 1/4 x 14 in. (41.3 x 35.6 cm). Date: ca. 1653-54.This charming family portrait represents the painter's cousin Hartogh van Moerkerken (1622-1694), his first wife, Sibilla Nijkerken (1625-1665), and their son Philippus (1652-1688). The woman is placed unconventionally to her husband's right, a position of honor most likely earned by providing the family with a male heir (as stressed by the family crests). The watch, usually signifying temperance or mortality, may in this context suggest continuity. The caption for this image, written about 1910, reads: "Children of Mr and the Hon Mrs Paterson of Castle Huntley (Charles J G Paterson, Esq) by Raeburn (1756-1823). Painted within a year or two of Raeburn's return from Italy, some critics have seen, or thought they saw, in this picture the influence of Michelangelo. Be this as it may, the handling, lighting, and tone and disposition of the color are eminently characteristic of much of the work done by Raeburn about 1790." Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823) was a Scottish portrait painter. He served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland.
