Here he drew inspiration from the seventeenth-century Dutch genre tradition for both the format and the subject. Over a century after its creation, the French novelist Marcel Proust said of Jean-SimÈon Chardinís audacious self-portrait, ìThis old oddity is so intelligent, so crazy Ö above all, so much of an artist.î In a fitting finale to a long, successful career as a painter of still lifes and genre scenes, Chardin turned in his last decade to a new medium, pastel, and to a new subject matter, portraits (primarily self-portraits). Eye problems arising from lead-based oil paint poisoning were the partial cause of this dramatic change. Of his thirteen extant pastel self-portraits, the most famous are versions of the example seen here, with the casually dressed, aging artist in his studio. A Man from the Middle East in the Artist's Studio ca. 1823-26 Auguste-Xavier Leprince French Most of Leprinces sitters seem to have been more or less like the painter himself—elegant Parisians of the middle class. The identity of the model depicted here and the circumstances that brought him into the artists studio are unknown, but beginning with Napoleons invasion of Egypt in 1798, French artists from Girodet to Gericault had relished the opportunity to paint figures in Middle Eastern dress. Leprinces interest in this pensive man may have stemmed from the war of independence being waged by the Greeks against the Ottoman Turks in the 1820s..
