Quilt center ca. 1790 John Hewson American John Hewson, the first important and well-documented textile printer in America, arrived in Philadelphia from London in September 1773 at the invitation of Benjamin Franklin. Trained to produce the highest quality block-printed textiles at Bromley Hall in London, Hewson set up a "Calicoe Printing Manufactory" almost immediately. He quickly gained fame for his flowered dress goods and printed coverlets, and for panels like this one. Though they may have been originally intended as handkerchiefs, many of the dozen or so that survive were used as center panels in quilts. These treasured high-style bedcovers usually have several wide borders of vibrant chintz, some with complex pieced or appliquéd areas. The center panels are known to be Hewson's work because one was included in a quilt made by his wife that descended through the family and is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The complete armor for man and horse is in the Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer (Court Hunting Cabinet and Armory) of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. It was made by the Milanese armorer and goldsmith Lucio Piccinino about 1575-80.The exuberantly detailed Mannerist ornament represented in the lifesize drawing was rendered on the armor by low-relief embossing, with the principal figures silvered, the ornamental enframements gilt, damascened in gold, and the background blued to create an overall spatial and coloristic effect of amazing richness. Dragon Wrapped around Saz Leaves ca. 1550-70 The drawing is executed in black ink on tan paper and represents stylized broken leaves around which a dragon is entwined. An outer border with pale marbling surrounds this inner composition. A further outer border executed in gold and black is filled with a repeating decorative pattern of scrolling vines bearing blossoms, leaves, and birds. Two seal impressions may be seen on the object. The first is just below the drawing and appears to read 'Abd Muhammad Sadiq. The second, on the outermost border, is too damaged to be read but appears to be a tughra-style cipher. The reverse of the composition reveals a modern illustrated and printed backing page.This ink drawing is a fine representative of the much admired genre of saz-style compositions.
