Cyrus McCormick of Virginia was the founder of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. McCormick built on the reaper designs of his father and is credited as the inventor of the mechanical reaper. His machinethe first one pictured herewas pulled by horses and cut the grain to one side. One of the first public showings of his reaper was in 1831, but he was granted a patent for his machine in 1834.

A bonanza farm was the phrase used in the 1870s in the United States to refer to very large farms - those that grew and harvested mostly wheat. And this was all during the Industrial Revolution. These farms were most usually close to the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad. This illustration, which dates to 1887, shows many workers guiding horses as they harvest the crops.

Farm at a canal; Small landscapes. The lever next to the farm has previously been interpreted as a location of a well. However, this lever was used to hoisting goods on and from a boat at the wooden construction with the ladder on the shore of the channel.

Farrier. In a yard, a farrier with nails confirms a horseshoe to the hoof of a horse. A man keeps the hind leg of the horse ready so that the blacksmith can do his job. Above the workplace of the blacksmith is a horseshoe. In the meantime a man with a whip performs a conversation with a rider.
