The Rokin. Horses were Breitners first subject and remained a life-long passion. This sketch shows how he made a preliminary lay-out of a cityscape. He did this on the spot, using a small panel that fit into the lid of his painters box. He depicted the two horses and the horse tram, as well as the contours of the houses, with swift strokes in brown tints over the summary underdrawing.

Landscape with Cattle probably ca. 1800 Jacob van Strij Dutch This impressive panel bears the signature of Aelbert Cuyp, and until recently was never doubted as his work. Cuyp's paintings were widely appreciated in the eighteenth century, and attracted a number of imitators. The most capable of them, Jacob van Strij, is very probably the author of this picture. Among the qualities that indicate an eighteenth-century painter are the impasto treatment of the clouds, the simplified highlights, the saturated greens and blues, and a tendency to render details as picturesque accents. Several motifs are repeated from paintings by Cuyp. The right background, for example, is derived from the so-called Salmon Fishing in the Mauritshuis, The Hague.. Landscape with Cattle 437760

Boy on a Ram 1786-1787 Spain. As painter to the king of Spain, Francisco de Goya also designed tapestries for the royal residences. The artist made small oil sketches to work out the designs, followed by full-scale painted cartoons that served as guides for the weavers at the kingís tapestry works. This cartoon was produced for a tapestry in a series decorating the dining room in the Palace of El Pardo outside Madrid. The roomís large panels illustrate a traditional decorative subject, the four seasons, but Goya exercised his imagination in the smaller panels above the doors, producing scenes of children and animals like this one..
