Sitter: Francis Dowman (British, 1744-1825). Date: ca. 1776.In this early work, Dowman used subtle grays to portray his elder brother Francis. An inscription at lower right indicates that the sitter holds the rank of captain. He later was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Artillery, and participated in the 1778 British capture of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia from the French. Portrait of a Man. Artist: Thomas Frye (Irish, Edenderry 1711/12-1762 London). Dimensions: 15-7/8 x 12-11/16 in. (40.4 x 32.3 cm). Date: 1760.Frye moved to London from Ireland in his twenties to work as a portrait and miniature painter. In 1744 he co-founded the Bow porcelain works, managing the enterprise until 1760, when ill health forced him to stop. He devoted his remaining years to creating dramatic mezzotint portraits, the first set of twelve described in the Public Advertiser of 1760 as "in the manner of Piazzetta, drawn from Nature and as large as life." This drawing likely was made in preparation for a mezzotint (unrealized) and shows a man from behind looking at a board or framed canvas. His right hand supports his chin, causing a ruffled cuff to splay out and allowing Frye to create a delicate visual interplay between passages of white and dark chalk. Portrait of Niccolò Paganini 1830 (backdated "1818") Luigi Calamatta Italian A long-time collaborator and friend of Ingres, Calamatta reproduced several of the artists compositions in elaborate burin engravings. In this case, Ingres supplied Calamatta with a traced and reversed drawing of Niccolò Paganini (43.85.10) to serve as a template for engraving his copper plate in the same direction. With expert precision, Calamatta used a burin to describe Paganinis facial features and spiral his hair in intricate curls. In contrast, the sketchy appearance of the lower body is achieved with roulettes, engraving tools with small, spiked wheels, which are rolled over the metal plate to produce minutely stippled outlines. Once printed, these lines successfully imitate the modulated tone and texture of graphite.
