The early 1900s caption for this illustration reads: Sulla Fights His Way into Rome. Sulla was the rival who drove the party of Marius from Rome. He then led an army to conquests in Asia, and in his absence the Marians regained their power. Sulla in his turn was declared an outlaw. He came back fierce with rage, and fought his way into Rome at the head of his troops. The citizens opposed him, knowing well the bloody vengeance he would wreak on all sides. The contest was kept up from street to street, and every foot of Sullas victorious struggle toward the Senate house was marked with blood.

The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.

The Peasants' Revolt, also named Wat Tyler's Rebellion or the Great Rising, Walter "Wat" Tyler (died 15 June 1381) was a leader of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England. He marched a group of rebels from Canterbury to the capital to oppose the institution of a poll tax and demand economic and social reforms. While the brief rebellion enjoyed early success, Tyler was killed by officers loyal to King Richard II during negotiations at Smithfield, London.
