Cheval glass (psyché) ca. 1810-14 Attributed to François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter French The psyché was so named for the heroine in La Fontaine's Les amours de Psyché, who was reputed to have looked at a full-length reflection of herself. Specific reference to the myth is in the frieze containing butterflies, symbols of Psyche. An identical gilt-bronze frieze was on a psyché made for Empress Marie-Louise in 1810. The two winged fantastic creatures on the crest hold a wreath, which probably originally contained a decorative motif or monogram.. Cheval glass (psyché) 195220

Two-fold screen, c. 1898, Carlo Bugatti, Italian, 1856-1940, 50 7/8 x 33 7/8 x 1 1/8 in. (129.22 x 86.04 x 2.86 cm), Wood, bone, vellum, pigment, brass, pewter, and other metals, Italy, 19th-20th century, Carlo Bugatti's curvilinear designs were often decorated with stylized flora and bird motifs and luxurious materials, resonating with both Islamic taste and the Art Nouveau style. In 1902, Bugatti achieved acclaim at the World's Fair in Turin for the four rooms that he designed, one of which contained this screen. While Bugatti's engaging designs were not necessarily practical, his work influenced the development of modernist design in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Mantelpiece 1515-20 French, Ile-de-France Elaborately carved stone fireplaces, often decorated with profile heads inside wreaths, were a key feature of noble dwellings. As the winged helmet of the female figure in the right-hand wreath suggests, these depictions were generally idealizations rather than portraits of actual individuals. In the left-hand wreath is the head of a male figure. The remainder of the mantelpiece is carved with floral motifs and fantastic hybrid animals, including phoenixes, reptilian beasts, and sea creatures. The fireplace comes from the Trie-Pillavoine familys manor house (called the manoir de Mornay-Villarceaux) in Omerville, Val-dOise. The coat of arms is a later addition.. Mantelpiece 206599

Lunette and decorative panel, one of twleve, 1884-1885, Louis Henri Sullivan; Maker: Northwestern Terra Cotta Works (a.k.a. Norweta), American, 1856-1924, Terracotta, United States, Chicago Style, Louis Sullivan designed these terracotta panels for the exterior of the Scoville Building in Chicago, one of the Adler and Sullivan firm's earliest commissions. It required them to remodel an existing Adler structure to accord with a new, much larger addition. The terracotta pieces shown here formed part of the organic decoration of stylized plants with which Sullivan tied the two buildings together. This lunette ornamented the arch above the windows of the top (fifth) story. It has an undulating design of ferns unfurling and would have complemented other organically-inspired terracotta pieces throughout the exterior.

The Eternal Father, sketch Francisco Bayeu y Subías (Spanish, 1734-1795). The Eternal Father, sketch, 1791. Oil on canvas, 24 7/8 x 24 7/8 in. (63.2 x 63.2 cm). In 1791 Bayeu, along with several other artists, earned a prestigious assignment to decorate the Oratory of the King in the Palacio Real de Aranjuez, south of Madrid. For one of the vaults of this two-chambered space dedicated to the Virgin Mary and to the Immaculate Conception, Bayeu painted a luminous God the Father enthroned on a sturdy bank of clouds. While several attendant angels bear a canopy, others carry a banderole, or banner, that reads Virtus altissimi obumbravit tibi” (The power of the Most High will overshadow you). An aptly selected text for the ceiling of the chapel, this verse from the Gospel of Luke (1:35) further announces Mary’s future role as the mother of Jesus. In three rectangular scenes surrounding the central composition of this sketch, Bayeu provides additional episodes from the life of Mary: the Bi

Louise Adele Gould 1893, carved 1894 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American In 1893 the New York lawyer Charles W. Gould commissioned Saint-Gaudens to complete a portrait of his late wife, Louise Adele Dickerson Gould (b. 1856), who died in 1883 at age twenty-six, after less than three years of marriage. Using photographs for reference, the sculptor modeled the demure Louise Gould as she appeared in fashionable bridal finery on her wedding day, St. Agnes Eve, January 20, 1881. The reference to St. Agnes, who is associated with purity and martyrdom, accentuates the melancholy of the sculpture. So too does its rectangular shape, which is evocative of a tombstone capped with an ornamental crest of acanthus scrolls, and the inscription on the lower portion of the panel: she seemed a splendid angel newly dressed save wings for heaven.. Rhododendrons Elizabeth Boott Duveneck (American, 1846-1888). Rhododendrons, 1882. Oil on wood panel, Individual panel: 35 15/16 x 10 in. (91.3 x 25.4 cm). When creating this ensemble of four panel paintings, Elizabeth Boott Duveneck looked to the dramatically cropped, asymmetrical compositions of Japanese art. In 1853 trade was reestablished between the Western world and Japan for the first time in more than two hundred years. Art enthusiasts, particularly in Duvenecks native Boston, quickly amassed large collections of Japanese art. This is a rare work by Duveneck, whose career was cut short by her premature death, soon after her move to Paris to marry her former teacher, the painter Frank Duveneck. American Art 1882

(248.9 x 88.9 x 3.8 cm). Date: 1925-26.Created for the music room of Solomon R. Guggenheim's residence in Port Washington, Long Island, these screens are an artistic collaboration between the designer Jean Dunand and the sculptor Séraphin Soudbinine. While Soudbinine conceived the composition and carved the bas-relief figures of otherworldly angels and rocklike forms, Dunand lacquered the screen. The titles are drawn from the Italian terms for very softly and very loudly played music. Guggenheim's widow, Irene Rothschild, donated the screens to the Metropolitan following the death of her husband, a passionate collector of modern art and the namesake of the Solomon R.
