The Hammock, 1880. James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). Etching and drypoint on antique laid paper; image: 27.7 x 18.1 cm (10 7/8 x 7 1/8 in.); sheet: 35 x 20.1 cm (13 3/4 x 7 15/16 in.). This etching depicts Kathleen Newton, a British divorcee who frequently modeled for the French artist James Tissot during the 1870s, while he lived in London. Based on a painting of the previous year, the print shows Newton reclining on a tasseled hammock in the artists own garden, engrossed in a novel. Tissot reinterpreted many of his paintings as etchings, inspired by a revived interest in the medium.

Keene's design was intended to be reproduced as a wood-engraving, probably in Punch, the popular periodical with which he was associated between 1864 and 1890. Apostle (Saint Philip or Andrew). Artist: Domenico Beccafumi (Italian, Cortine in Valdibiana Montaperti 1484-1551 Siena). Dimensions: Sheet: 16 1/2 × 8 3/4 in. (41.9 × 22.2 cm). Date: ca. 1547.Beccafumi, best known as a painter, was one of the great experimental printmakers of the Renaissance. This remarkable print is the most outstanding of four chiaroscuro woodcuts of saints that Beccafumi produced for an unfinished series of apostles. The impression exhibited here does not show the print in its entirety but only a single block of three (in other words, two additional woodblocks would have been printed on a single sheet to form the complete chiaroscuro image). This block would not have been printed in black, as shown, but would have served as an overall middle tone between a block printed in a light shade of ink and another printed in a darker shade.
