All Fours first published March 14, 1783 a later reissue? (?) Thomas Rowlandson British Within an oval, two men play "All Fours" an English card game similar to Whist. They sit on ladder-backed chairs at a small round topped tripod table. The older man, at right, pulls an ace of spades from his hand and displays it as the winning card. He is dressed plainly and wears a bob wig. The younger man, thin and fashionably dressed, with a pigtail queue, reacts in consternation. The night mare. Cartoon shows a scantily clad woman asleep on a bed, a little man sitting on her chest pulling back her see-through covers, as one of her arms hangs to the floor near a chamber pot (written on it: 'Source of Nile') and a book on a chair titled 'Bruces Travels.'

Laceing sic a Dandy. Artist: Anonymous, British, 19th century. Dimensions: image: 13 3/16 x 8 3/8 in. (33.5 x 21.3 cm)sheet: 14 3/16 x 9 5/16 in. (36 x 23.6 cm). Publisher: Thomas Tegg (British, 1776-1846). Date: January 26, 1819.Dandies needed help to achieve the silhouette that contemporary fashion demanded around 1820. A wasp waist was created by means of tightly laced stays, while padding produced broad shoulders and thighs. This dandy instructs two servants to pull as hard as they can on his corset strings. The dress and accent of the man at right, as well as the comb stuck in his hair, identify him as a French hairdresser, who jeeringly refers to his master's "John Bull Belly." British humor at this period stereotyped Frenchmen as thin and underfed while contrasting them with over-nourished Britons. This particular embodiment of British manhood is presented as an exemplar of modern ridiculousness. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Bassoon with a French Horn Accompaniment Thomas Rowlandson British Publisher Thomas Tegg British May 16, 1811 This is one of two prints that Rowlandson devoted to a snoring couple, using the title to suggest that the man projects a lower sound and the woman a higher. In this 1811 version published by Thomas Tegg, a detailed view of the couple's bedroom enhances the narrative, with the sword and shotgun hanging on the wall suggesting that the man was a soldier who has returned to a country life. In 1803, for William Holland, Rowlandson centered the image on the heads of the two sleepers (see 59.533.888 and 59.533.2018 for the earlier image; and 17.3.888-11 and 59.533.1398 for other impressions of this image).
