Hoddart's machinery for making rope. The hemp yarn was put on to bobbins and the number of strands required to five the necessary thickness of rope passed through funnel to the machinery which did the twisting. This apparatus did away with the need for rope walks long enough to make ship's cables without joins.

Engraving depicting the dipping of tallow candles. A frame of broaches containing wicks is attached to a nodding donkey - a balance- shaped beam suspended from the ceiling with a pan containing counter-balance weights at one end. The weights in the pan determined the size of candles being dipped. Dated 19th Century

Engraving depicting the turbines on the Portrush Railway, Ireland. This was the first railway to be powered by hydroelectricity. The electrical work was carried out under the direction of Sir Charles Siemens. Wooden launder fed water to discharge down near-vertical pipes and through the Alcott turbines which are contained in the spherical iron housings To discharge to waste in the stream below. Engraving showing the ice making machine, designed by Mr. Harrison of Geelong, Australia, 1858. Built by Mr. Siebe of Denmark Street, Soho, London, this machine was a prototype reportedly capable of producing 5,000 to 6,000 pounds of ice per day. This machine used evaporation of ether in a vacuum to produce refrigeration and was driven by a ten-horse power steam engine. Date: 1858
