A Cosey Corner. Artist: Frank Millet (1846-1912). Dimensions: 36 1/4 x 24 1/4 in. (92.1 x 61.6 cm). Date: 1884.Millet, who specialized in American and English costume genre paintings, first visited Broadway, the picturesque Cotswolds village, in 1884. His home and studio there would become the center of an Anglo-American artists colony to which John Singer Sargent and Henry James were frequent visitors. The costume of the figure reading in "A Cosey Corner" is a romantic re-creation of several different English eighteenth-century fashions, and the interior architecture also seems English. Several features of the room, however, correspond to a published description of the colonial New England kitchen in Millet's East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, studio. Later in his life, Millet was active in many arts organizations, including the American Academy in Rome. Returning to New York on academy business, Millet went down on the Titanic. Depictions of schooling, such as The Reprimand, were particularly fashionable after 1850, thanks to Frances renewed interest in educating young children. Oller was also intensely interested in pedagogy; he established art schools in Puerto Rico, published a treatise on geometry and art, and painted portraits of the islands most influential teachers. Old Woman Praying late 1630s or early 1640s Matthias Stom Dutch The earliest known reference to Stom (wrongly called Stomer in modern literature) dates from 1630, when he was living in the same house in Rome that the Utrecht painter Paulus Bor occupied about five years earlier. About 1632 Stom went to Naples, and in the 1640s he was active in Palermo and elsewhere in Sicily. Antonio Ruffo, the nobleman in Messina for whom Rembrandt painted Aristotle with a Bust of Homer (61.198) in 1653, purchased three works by Stom between 1646 and 1649. Both the name Stom and the usual description of him as "fiamingo" indicate that he was Flemish, not Dutch. He specialized in exaggerated Caravaggesque effects of light and shadow, with leathery surfaces suited to his frequent representation of elderly characters.. Old Woman Praying 437757

Date: 1863.This painting depicts a subject visible from Daumier's studio on the quai d'Anjou in Paris: laundresses returning from laundry boats moored on the Seine. Despite the weight of her bulky load, the woman tenderly extends her hand to help a child up the steps of the embankment. With her sturdy form silhouetted against a bright background, the humble worker acquires a certain monumentality. This picture is the largest and possibly the last of three painted versions of the composition; Daumier's pigments have deteriorated, obscuring the last digit of the date inscribed at the lower left, but in 1893 it was recorded as 1863.
