French textile manuscript, ca. 1820, This manuscript, an instruction manual for a school associated with a manufactory begins with a history of silk manufacture and continues with discussion of contemporary silk makers in Spain, Italy and France. The text is illustrated with 136 intricate drawings of looms, many in watercolor, showing set-ups for various patterns and materials, and includes 102 tipped-in examples of fabric. The chapters contain detailed information on silkworms and their breeding, the pulling of silk, and the composition of fashion materials, including gauze and damask.
