Illustration showing Aleksandr Mikhailovich Krymov (1871-- 1917) and his staff, halted at Luga, 1917. Krymov was appointed commander of the Petrograd Army. He was given the order to advance on the capital to rescue the Provisional Government from what was believed to be a Bolshevik coup. Krymov and his staff, travelling on the train of the 1st Don Cossack Division, were halted by the railway workers, Krymov could only watch in his train compartment as Cossacks in large numbers defected to the Soviet side. On 30 August he agreed to travel with a government representative to Petrograd, and on 31 August he met with Kerensky, where he tried to explain that he had only brought his troops in an attempt to defend the government, but Kerensky ordered him to trial by military court

A VISIT TO THE BATTLEFIELD OF SOLFERINO

The caption reads: Battle of Boonesborough. Records seem to indicate that it took place in May of 1777. The Native Americans did retreat. Boonesborough had been settled in 1775. This illustration is from the book titled: Story of the Wild West and Camp Fire Chats: Being the Complete and Authentic History of the Great Heroes of the Western Plains, Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill, Kit Carson, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, and Generals Crooks, Miles and Custer. It was first published in 1888. This edition was published in 1902.

The Dutch Folly Fort, Canton River - from a painting by a Chinese artist, 1857. Second Opium War. '...it was found necessary to proceed on the offensive. Accordingly, two mortars and three heavy guns having been placed in position on the Dutch Folly, a sharp shelling on the Governmental part of the city was kept up for several days. The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839-42), known popularly as the First Opium War or simply the Opium War, was fought between the United Kingdom and the Qing Dynasty of China over their conflicting viewpoints on diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of justice. Chinese officials wished to stop what was perceived as an outflow of silver and to control the spread of opium, and confiscated supplies of opium from British traders. The British government, although not officially denying China's right to control imports, objected to this seizure and used its newly developed military power to enforce violent redress. In 1842, the Treaty of Nanking-the first of what the Chinese later called the unequal treaties-granted an indemnity to Britain, the opening of five treaty ports, and the cession of Hong Kong Island, thereby ending the trade monopoly of the Canton System. The failure of the treaty to satisfy British goals of improved trade and diplomatic relations led to the Second Opium
