Pontiac (d. 1769) was an Ottawa Indian chief. Pontiac's Rebellion (named after him) (1763-1766) was an Indian uprising against the British after the close of the French and Indian Wars. In this late 1800s engraving, Pontiac and several Ottawas meet with Major Gladwin regarding the fort at Detroit, the fort to which Pontiac lay siege.

Christiana Davis (1667-1739) fatally wounding an opponent during a duel she fought while masquerading as a soldier. Christian Davies (1667 7 July 1739), born Christian Cavanagh, was a female soldier (disguised as a man) and later a sutler for the 4th Dragoons, later the 2nd Royal North British Dragoons. She was also known as Kit Cavanagh and Mother Ross. She served, in disguise, as a trooper in the British Armyfirst as an infantry man, from 1697 until 1701, and then for five years as a dragoon in the Scots Greys from 1701 until discovered in 1706 while searching for her husband.

Greely, the American Meteorological Expedition of 1881-4 explored the Arctic around Greenland, set a new furthest North record and attempted to establish a meteorological station.
