Two Chinese 19th century, executioners hold the interpreter's hands and arms while he is kneeling. Across the back of his legs they lay a piece of bamboo on which they tread. The severity of the pressure, and so of the pain inflicted, is intensified and decreased as they step towards or away from their victims. 1813

The War in Denmark from a sketch by our special artist with the allied German armies: Prussian outposts before Düppel: "Wer da" ("Who goes there"), 1864. 'The pair of martial figures which our Artist has drawn, standing with their rifle-muskets half raised, and already fingering the deadly triggers, are a couple of Prussian infantry soldiers, on outpost duty somewhere in the neighbourhood of Düppel. The metal helmet, surmounted with a spike, which is peculiar to the army of Prussia, should be well adapted to resist a sabre-cut, when they receive a cavalry charge

Thibaw Min (1 January 1859 - 19 December 1916) was the last king of the Konbaung dynasty of Burma (Myanmar) and also the last in Burmese history. His reign ended when Burma was defeated by the forces of the British Empire in the Third Anglo-Burmese War, on 29 November 1885, prior to its official annexation on 1 January 1886. After abdicating the throne, Thibaw, his wife Supayalat and two infant daughters were exiled to Ratnagiri, India, a port city off the Arabian Sea. Supayalat (13 December 1859 - 24 November 1925) was the last queen of Burma who reigned in Mandalay (1878-1885), born to King Mindon Min and Queen of Alenandaw. Their reign lasted just seven years when Thibaw Min was defeated in the Third Anglo-Burmese War and forced to abdicate by the British in 1885. On 25 November 1885 they were taken away in a covered carriage, leaving Mandalay Palace by the southern gate of the walled city along the streets lined by British soldiers and their wailing subjects, to the River Irrawaddy

An explosion as seen from Charing Cross Station, taken from a sketch by an eye witness showing flames pouring out of the tunnel towards shocked onlookers. The explosion took place between Praed Street and Edgware Road when the train was traveling from Charing Cross to Westminster. The wounded were taken to St Mary's Hospital to be treated. In the summer of 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS 'Alert' and HMS 'Discovery', to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound.
