Captain Jack, whose Modoc name was Kintpuash, as a prisoner of war in US Army custody in 1873. In 1870 he led a Modoc band's return from their Klamath Reservation to their ancestral land near Tule Lake (Lost River). In July 1870, the US Army decided to force the Modoc Indians back to their Oregon reservation. 120 warriors resisted from the natural fortress of lava beds, on the California-Oregon border from, July 6, 1872, until their defeat and surrender on June 4, 1873  (BSLOC_2019_9_119)
