US Civil War. Battle of Mobile Bay, Aug. 5, 1864. Richard D. Dunphy, a coal heaver on the USS Hartford, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, for performing his duties with skill and courage while under heavy fire. The Irish immigrant joined the Navy in 1863, and lost both arms above the elbow in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Aug. 5, 1864. He was stuck by fragment of an artillery shell from the Confederate ironclad CSS Tennessee. After the war, he married, raised a family, and lived to age 62 (BSLOC_2019_2_33)

Confederate prisoner of war wears a tattered and worn uniform, at Fort Lookout, Maryland, c. 1863-65. He sits holding a piece of paper, with his legs crossed, and a open toed show under the chair. The southern economy could not supply standard uniforms, so soldiers mended, stole, and removed clothing from enemy dead. Alfred Holt Colquitt (April 20, 1824 - March 26, 1894) was an American lawyer, preacher, soldier, and politician. Paul Jones Semmes (June 4, 1815 - July 10, 1863) was a banker, businessman, and a Confederate brigadier general in the American Civil War, mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg.
