Genl Smith. Title inscribed lower left, Smith was appointed Brigadier General on 13 August 1861, Purchase; Conner & Rosenkranz; 1986; (DLC/PP-1986:108), Alden F. Brooks enlisted in 1862 as a Corporal in the 105th Infantry (Ohio) and mustered out in June 1865 as a First Lieutenant. The regiment served in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia before joining Serman's Atlanta Campaign and March to the Sea. Major General Edward R. S. Canby, during the US Civil War, ca. 1860-65. Canby coordinated a campaign against the Navajo in 1860. At the start of the Civil War, Canby commanded Fort Defiance, New Mexico Territory and forced the Confederates to retreat to Texas after the Union's strategic victory at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. On April 11, 1873, as a federal Peace Commissioner, he was murdered by Modoc Indians. Canby was the only general to be killed during the Indian Wars (BSLOC_2019_9_121)
