John Vinall John Mason Furness (American, 1763-1804). John Vinall, ca. 1792. Oil on canvas, 49 5/16 x 39 7/16 in. (125.2 x 100.2 cm). A somewhat mysterious figure whose artistic reputation rests on this single impressive work, John Mason Furness began his artistic career during the 1780s as an engraver in Boston. By 1785, he took up residence, presumably as a painter, in the studio formerly occupied by the famous John Smibert. In light of his substantial skills as a draftsman and engraver, Furness was particularly well suited to paint the respected Boston schoolmaster and cartographer John Vinall (1736 1823). In this striking, crisply drawn, and informal yet imposing portrait, Vinall is shown seated beside a table, on which are displayed his case of drafting implements, a compass, and an unfinished map. Roger Sherman, by Ralph Earl, 1775, American painting, oil on canvas. The self-educated Sherman was trained to be a cobbler by his father. After he passed the bar in 1754, his law practice led him into colonial politics. At the Continental Congress he was on the drafting committees Declaration of Independence, 1776, and the Articles of Confederation, 1781. At the 1887 Philadelphia Constitutional, convention he defended the interests of small states, contributing to debates that shaped Connecticut Compromise. Sherman served in the first House of Representatives and later in the Senate as a Federalist (BSLOC_2019_4_159)

Date: 1782.Augustus Brine (1769-1840) was the son of Admiral James Brine of the Royal British Navy, by his first wife, Jane Knight. At the age of thirteen, in 1782, Brine enlisted in the Navy as a midshipman aboard the "Belliqueux" under the command of his father. In 1790, he was made lieutenant and, eight years later, he became a commander. During the War of 1812, he commanded the "Medway" and successfully captured the American brig "Syran." He was named rear admiral in 1822. This portrait of young Brine was painted in 1782, seven years after Copley had arrived in England. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
