Andrew Varick Stout 1859 Charles Loring Elliott A member of a prominent New York family, Stout (1812-1883) established the successful shoe company, Stout and Ward, and in 1855, became the founder and first president of the Shoe and Leather Bank. He also served as the director of several other banks and insurance companies, and was a supporter of both the Drew Theological seminary in New Jersey and Wesleyan University in Connecticut. An active civic leader in New York City and City Chamberlain (1857-60), Stout advanced his own money to pay the salaries of the police department during a shortage of public funds. In gratitude, they presented him with this portrait, which exhibits the characteristic detail and care of Elliott's style.. Andrew Varick Stout 10848

Jacques-Louis Leblanc (1774-1846). Artist: Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, Montauban 1780-1867 Paris). Dimensions: 47 5/8 x 37 5/8 in. (121 x 95.6 cm). Date: 1823.This portrait of Leblanc and that of his wife (19.77.2) were painted in 1823, shortly after Ingres met the couple in Florence. Madame Leblanc had been lady-in-waiting to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany, Napoleon's sister Élisa Bacchiochi; Monsieur Leblanc was her secretary. Ingres described him as "a Frenchman, very rich and also quite generous and good, who has adopted us, to the point of overwhelming us with kindnesses and also with requests for paintings portraits, etc." Edgar Degas, who first saw these portraits in 1854, described his acquisition of them in 1896 as "the event of my life as a collector." John Keats (31 October 1795 - 23 February 1821) was an English Romantic poet. He was one of the main figures of the second generation of Romantic poets along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, despite his work only having been in publication for four years before his death. Although his poems were not generally well received by critics during his life, his reputation grew after his death, so that by the end of the 19th century he had become one of the most beloved of all English poets. He had a significant influence on a diverse range of poets and writers. Jorge Luis Borges stated that his first encounter with Keats was the most significant literary experience of his life. The poetry of Keats is characterised by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analysed in English literature.

Date: 1826.DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) was born in New York and graduated from Columbia University in 1786. For many years he was a political power in city, state, and national affairs. Today, he is chiefly remembered for his sponsorship of the Erie Canal, but in his day he was also noted for his interest in legal reform and public education. This picture was painted and exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1826, when Clinton was governor of New York. Henry N. Dodge stated that it was painted for his father-in-law, Moseley I. Danforth, an engraver who planned to make and sell engravings of it. When he failed to attract sufficient subscribers, however, he abandoned the project. Amédée-David, the Comte de Pastoret 1823-1826 France. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, who championed Classical ideals throughout his long and productive career, began this portrait in 1823, the same year that the thirty-two-year-old count helped him become a full member of the AcadÈmie des Beaux-Arts. Ingres astutely captured the character of the suave young nobleman, from the refined line of his silhouette to his elegant costume, long fingers, and slightly swaggering pose. The artistís fastidious, impeccable technique is particularly evident in the precisely rendered details of the sword hilt and the medal of the Order of the Legion of Honor, which the count received in 1824. Ingres studied in the prestigious atelier of Jacques-Louis David; although he considered himself a history painter, portraits such as this paid his bills for many years and earned him considerable praise. Joseph Sherburne ca. 1767-70 John Singleton Copley American The subject of this astonishingly vital portrait was a wealthy Boston merchant. He chose to be painted wearing a loose but elegant banyan, or lounge robea popular gentleman’s fashion at the timeand a turban instead of a formal wig. Most striking about the portrait is its convincing sense of reality, which Copley achieved through various means. He meticulously painted every fold of cloth and bit of pattern in Sherburne’s damask gown as well as every fleshy wrinkle on his face and hands. Date: 1861.Suisse, a former artist's model, established an informal--and extremely liberal--art school in Paris which the young Courbet attended in the mid-1840s. By the time of this portrait, dated to 1861, Manet, Monet, and Pissarro had also studied at the Académie Suisse. The sitter's spectacles and tousled gray hair indicate that he is getting on in age, but his gaze is sharp and animated; a fitting tribute to an early creative influence, painted the same year that Courbet opened a teaching studio of his own.
