Portrait of a Man, Possibly Jean de Langeac (died 1541), Bishop of Limoges. Artist: Netherlandish Painter (dated 1539). Dimensions: 47 1/4 x 34 1/2 in. (120 x 87.6 cm).The face, hands, and still life elements are the least affected parts of this much damaged painting. Previously attributed to the British school, the picture is more likely the work of a Flemish painter active in France. The signet on the table shows the Langeac coat of arms against a bishop's crozier, and the sitter is probably Jean de Langeac, Bishop of Limoges. Langeac went to Scotland and England in 1536, but there is no record of his having been there after August, 1537, when he returned to France. In 1539, the year in which this portrait was painted, he became the French ambassador to Rome. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
