Portrait of a Man probably ca. 1862 Gustave Courbet French The distinctive receding hairline and full lips suggest that the sitter for this informal portrait may be the dealer Jules Luquet, a supporter and friend of Courbets beginning in the 1860s. In size, composition, and handling, the picture is similar to the artists 1862 portrait of the painter Auguste Fajon (Musée Fabre, Montpellier), and it probably dates to about the same time. Courbet seems to have favored the format for depictions of people he knew well. A more loosely painted canvas in a Swiss private collection has been identified as a study for the present work.. The Man Who Posed as Richelieu Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929). The Man Who Posed as Richelieu, 1898. Oil on canvas, 31 15/16 x 25 11/16 in. (81.2 x 65.3 cm). The title of Robert Henri's portrait of an unnamed Paris model underscores the artifice of posing by referring to two separate personalities: the historical persona of the ruthless French cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis Richelieu (1585-1642) and that of the anonymous sitter, whose identity remains a mystery.
