John Haskins Joseph Badger (American, 1708-1765). John Haskins, 1759. Oil on canvas, 36 x 27 1/8 in. (91.4 x 68.9 cm). Painted in two major colonial American centers, these portraits from Boston and Mexico City (then New Spain) share a formality of pose and an emphasis on fine costume that reveal a common source in European portraiture. John Haskins holds his hand on his hip, in a pose of authority found in Elizabethan portraits. Nevertheless, this upright barrel maker known as Honest John Haskins” was a modest patron when compared to his wealthy and ambitious Mexican counterpart. The inscription at the bottom of Don Ignacio Leonel Gómez Cervantes’s portrait lists honors and inherited titles that explicitly identify him as a descendant of an aristocratic Spanish American family. Self-Portrait 1825-28 George Chinnery British Chinnery painted more than a dozen self-portraits, the first of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 1798; this is the most intimate and engaging of them all. An enigmatic figure, Chinnery was eccentric and volatile, with a tendency to hypochondria, a raconteur and wit with a gift for friendship. This likeness was painted in China and must date to the years 1825-28. Its first owner was the United States consul Benjamin Chew Wilcox, a businessman in the opium trade who commissioned a full-length portrait of himself from the artist (The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd.).. Matthew Clarkson ca. 1794 Gilbert Stuart American Like his father before him, Matthew Clarkson was prominent in the political and commercial affairs of New York. He embarked early on a military career, distinguishing himself at the age of nineteen in the Battle of Saratoga. After his retirement from active duty about 1788, he followed the family tradition in his energetic participation in political and civic projects.
