Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo (1785/86-1841), the Architect 1820 Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish Pérezs loosely rolled up sleeves—a painterly tour de force—and relaxed expression combine with Goyas nearly monochrome palette to create an exceptionally direct and informal portrait of the artists close friend, the architect Tiburcio Pérez. Just the year before, Goya had painted Pérezs uncle, also an architect, in a far more regal and conventional portrait today in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Allan Melville 1810 John Rubens Smith American In his novel "Pierre, or The Ambiguities" (1852), Herman Melville fictionalized this portrait of his father, describing the subject as the father of Pierre, the hero of the tale. The portrait so fascinated the younger Melville that an entire chapter, and much of the novel's theme, turns upon the mystery of the sitter's character, concealed by his youth, informality, and apparent candor. The portraitist Smith never exceeded his mastery here of exacting technique in the service of expression. The artist's métier in such cabinet-sized watercolor portraits stems from miniature painting and the related art of "stained drawings" developed in England in the late eighteenth century. Smith undoubtedly also derived his technique from his father, John Raphael Smith, who specialized in stipple engravings of portraits and genre scenes in his native London.. Allan Melville 12613

Captain Abraham Vorhees ca. 1803-5 Micah Williams Williams began his career as a silver plater in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Financial hardships, however, landed him in debtors prison in 1814. After his release, he embarked upon his second career, as an itinerant portraitist to New Jerseys middle class. He worked primarily in pastel, a medium that enabled him to execute likenesses quickly and inexpensively. Williams completed this portrait when the sitter was in his seventies. Signs of age are visible in the highly stylized wrinkles on his face, yet the works stiffness is relieved by soft pastel contours and accents of vibrant color, used to capture Vorheess piercing blue eyes and the gold buttons on his double-breasted jacket..
