Louis (Ludwig) Spohr (1784-1859). Oil on Canvas, artist unknown. Spohr was a German composer, violinist and conductor, with an innovative streak. He was one of the pioneers of conducting with a baton and also invented the violin chinrest. Despite a prolific output, he fell into relative obscurity after his death. In this portrait Spohr is shown penning what appears to be the music for 'God save the King' In his late teens Spohr was sponsored by the Duke of Brunswick and the same melody was used by Brunswick for its own national anthem 'Heil unserm Herzof, Heil!' The Duke was married to Augusta, sister of George III.

Jacques-Louis Leblanc (1774-1846) 1823 Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres French This portrait of Leblanc and that of his wife (19.77.2) were painted in 1823, shortly after Ingres met the couple in Florence. Madame Leblanc had been lady-in-waiting to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany, Napoleons sister Elisa Baciocchi; Monsieur Leblanc was her secretary. Ingres described him as "a Frenchman, very rich and also quite generous and good, who has adopted us, to the point of overwhelming us with kindnesses and also with requests for paintings, portraits, etc." Edgar Degas, who first saw these portraits in 1854, described his acquisition of them in 1896 as "the event of my life as a collector." Portrait of the Artist ca. 1786 Gilbert Stuart American Preserved on a label found on the back of this picture are excerpts from a letter dated December 6, 1884, in which Jane Stuart, the artist's youngest daughter, wrote of the work and her father, "He painted a small sketch of himself for my mother (in London after great persuasion) but could not be induced to finish it." This suggests that the portrait was painted when Stuart was about age thirty, shortly after his marriage to Charlotte Coates on May 10, 1786.
