Gethmans portrait. Oil. Starting from the 18th century, secular art replaces religious icon drawing. In russian realism of the 18th century, realism competes with the glorification for the final depiction form. Nikitin, as a serf that belonged to count Sheremetiev, was depicted as realistic as possible. Its obvious that the painting was influenced by the western bourgeois realism movement. There are no attributes of power or the title depicted, and the realism of it makes one of the most fascinating artworks of that time. Nikitin I.M. 1690-1741.
