This paddle-steamer ferry was built for the Woodside Ferry Commissioners to a design that allowed up to 2000 passengers per journey. The loss of H.M.S Eurydice: image taken from a sketch by two surviors. The ship was seen approaching Bonchurch off the coast near the Isle of Wight, on its return from a training exercise in the West Indies. Twenty minutes later, a heavy squall caught the ship unawares. The storm, lasting only ten miutes, totally engulfed the ship, killing 300 crew and passengers. Date: 30th March 1878

Engraving showing the Steamship 'Great Western' being struck amidships in a gale during a crossing from Liverpool to New York in 1846. At this point in the voyage, the Captain was trying to wear ship, but the wind was so great that the sails he set were blown off the yards. Launched in 1837, this wooden paddle steamer was designed by I.K. Brunel and gave service to the Great Western Steamship Company and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. She was scrapped at the Castle's Yard, on the Thames

HMS Erebus took part in the Ross expedition of 1839-1843, and was abandoned in 1848 during the third Franklin expedition. The sunken wreck was discovered by the Canadian Victoria Strait Expedition in September 2014. Erebus was refitted as an exploration vessel for Antarctic service, and on 21 November 1840 - captained by James Clark Ross - she departed from Van Diemen's Land for Antarctica in company with Terror. In January 1841, the crews of both ships landed on Victoria Land, and proceeded to name areas of the landscape after British politicians, scientists, and acquaintances. Mount Erebus, on Ross Island, was named after one ship and Mount Terror after the other.
