'The Melbourne papers received by last Australian mail contain full particulars of the wreck of this splendid ship, of the Black Ball Royal Mail fine of clippers. The Schomberg sailed from Liverpool on the 6th Oct...a current running westward from three to four knots an hour - of which the captain was ignorant, and of which no mention is made in any existing chart...carried the ship into a sandspit about thirty-five miles west of Cape Otway, not laid down in any of the charts...'. Isabella II (1830-1904). Queen of Spain (1833-1868). She was the elder daughter of Ferdinand VII by his fourth wife, Maria Cristina. Proclaimed queen on her father's death in 1833. During her minority (1833-1843), her mother and General Espartero acted as regents. Isabella settled in Paris, where in 1870 she abdicated in favour of her elder surviving son, the future king Alfonso XII (1874-1885), after the Revolution of 1868. The Peninsular and Oriental Company's ship Candia under repair on the Atakah Reef, 1862. The steamship, which had suffered a fractured propeller shaft in the Red Sea, was beached on the Atakah Reef, in the Gulf of Suez to enable repairs to be made. The reef was used as there were no docks nearby. The lifting of the ship on to the reef was a very complex technical operation, but was carried out successfully. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.

Arrival of the 'Great Western' at New York (1838), c1895. Steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) and built by William Patterson (1795-1869) of Bristol, which began a regular run between Bristol and New York in 1838. This was a steam-powered wooden vessel, capable of 12 knots under steam and, because of her engine and her ability to carry fuel for 26 days, it was possible to cut down her rigging.
