The reign of James I of England, which was from 1603-1625, saw the beginning of English colonization in North America. The conflict between James I (and his successor Charles I) and the large middle-class parliamentary party became known as the Puritan Revolution. The Puritan movement began in the reign of James's predecessor, Elizabeth I, and promoted reform in the Church of England. In this late 1800s engraving, Puritan representatives are shown in conference with James I.

An engraving depicting the production of white lead (carbonated lead) used mainly in the paint industry. On a bed of spent tanner's bark were set pots of vinegar: a sheet of lead placed on each container. Bark, vinegar pots and lead were placed up in layers to a height of about 7.6 m. The door of the chamber closed for many weeks. The bark fermented and raised the temperature, and utilising heat, the vinegar and the gasses gave off, the carbonated lead was produced.
