The first public festival held by the Metropolitan Sanitary Association in 1851. With thousands of deaths from diseases such as cholera and typhoid as a result of poor sanitation in the capital city throughout the 19th century, various reforming societies were set up to promote cleanliness and welfare. Charles Dickens was himself a keen advocate of improved sanitation and is recorded as proposing a toast to 'The Board of Health' at this particular banquet. Date: 1851
