A Useful Manufacture: The 'Raw Material' 'Worked Up'. The Burning of the Royal Navy training ship 'Goliath', 1876. Destitute boys from the London streets and workhouses were given places on board naval training ships such as 'Chichester', 'Arethusa', 'Shaftesbury' and 'Goliath' and trained to become sailors. When fire broke out on the 'Goliath', because of their training, the boys knew their stations and responded to command and were saved. The demobilisation of the army at the end of World War I was a slow process as this picture, from January 1919 confirms. Some units remained to police the Rhineland region, and were topped up by regulars, but the rest would be divided up for demobilisation according to priority. Civil servants - the ones who would administer the return of so many men to the workforce - went first, followed by pivotal men (the job creators) and then slip men (who had notes from employers promising work). The caption for this illustrartion reds: I would rather be carried out dead , said Stuyvesant. Peter Stuyvesant was the director-general at the Dutch colony of New Netherland in the New World from 1647-1664. After the English took control of the area, Sir George Cartwright handed Stuyvesant a summons to surrender and cede the area to the English. Stuyvesant refused to obey and tore the letter to pieces.
