Valley with Fir (Shade on the Mountain) 1909 Henri-Edmond Cross (Henri-Edmond Delacroix) French Henri-Edmond Cross was a practitioner of the Neoimpressionist style of painting, a short-lived avantgarde movement in the late nineteenth century which emphasized the use of separate touches of interwoven pigment to achieve greater vibrancy of color in the observers eye. Cross executed this landscape with a palette of contrasting hues, employing a technique that he adapted from Georges Seurat earlier in his career. Strokes of paint are layered across the canvas in varying density, while also leaving areas of primed ground exposed in the foreground and at the left side of the composition. In 1883, he settled in London, where he likely executed this pastel before moving back to Germany in 1901. Muhrman brilliantly captures the luminous, ephemeral quality of the spring blossoms in this dark shadowy garden. He applies quick, short strokes of white and pink pastel, so that the light-catching powdery particles twinkle against the dark branches.

From Jerusalem. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 12 x 17 7/8 in. (30.5 x 45.4 cm). Date: 1905-6.The peripatetic Sargent made his second trip to the Middle East in 1905-6 to conduct research for a mural commission for the Boston Public Library. While traveling through Syria and Palestine, he captured the sights and scenery in a series of watercolors and sketches. In this view from Jerusalem, Sargent recorded the gentle descent of the landscape toward the horizon. The vivid hues of the sky and the contrast of the warm and cool colors on the ground suggest a transitional moment, probably sunset. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
