Pyrography Picture Panel - Asiastic Battle Scene, 1800-1850. Pinto Collection - Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.. Made in Belgium by Count Walery de Rottermund. After lithograph by Alexander Orlowski (1777-1832). This pyrographic panel is from a lithograph by the Polish artist, Alexander Orlowski (1777-1832). Count de Rottermund was a Polish émigré who settled in Belgium following the Polish insurrection of 1830. He made pyrographic panels from a number of Orlowski's engravings. There are four in the Pinto collection. Pale, fine grained woods which give a plain surface, like sycamore or holly, were usually preferred for pyrography work. De Rottermund's panels are unusual as they are executed on figured wood which he used to help create a sense of movement in his work.

Hortensia Fernand Khnopff Belgian 1884 Khnopff employed an unconventional, close-up viewpoint that boldly emphasizes the floral still life over the figure in the background. The artist underscored the prominence of the houseplant by titling this painting Hortensia, the French word for hydrangea. A single bright red blossom placed suggestively on the tabletop punctuates the inventive composition. When Khnopff painted this work, he was only twenty-six years old, but he was already a key member of the artistic vanguard that arose in Belgium in the 1880s and 1890s. He would soon abandon informal views of everyday life and turn to creating works rich in mystery and reverie.

Presenting the Tripod 1803 Wang Xuehao At the center of this short scroll, the scholar Ruan Yuan (1764-1849) travels on a boat that carries a prominent bronze vessel on its bow, approaching a monastery at the foot of a hilly island. He is about to present an inscribed Han dynasty tripod to the monastery on Jiaoshan, Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, where it will be paired with an important Zhou dynasty bronze vessel. Jiaoshan was a center for the study of ancient scripts preserved on bronze and stone artifacts. Ruans act epitomizes the intellectual ethos of his time, when antiquarian and epigraphic research was a mainstream form of scholarship in China. His generous gesture—sharing his ancient treasure with the scholarly community—was celebrated by his contemporaries and immortalized in this painting.. Presenting the Tripod. (179.07 × 47.31 cm) (mount), Ink and color on silk, Japan, 19th century, This is a scene from the Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), a collection of prose and poetry from the 10th century. As the story goes, a husband starts an affair with a woman from Takayasu. Since his wife does not appear jealous, he suspects that she has a lover, too, and one day he hides in the garden to observe her. When he sees her reciting a poem about her wish for him to return safely from his journey, the husband decides never to visit his mistress again. Some time later, on a trip to Takayasu, he visits the former mistress's house and, as depicted here, sees her in careless attire, with a rice ladle in her hands and an overflowing bowl of food. This sight disgusts him so much that he decides never to return to Takayasu again.

It was produced during the artists active involvement with the Tile Club.
