Netherlands / Japan: 'The Courtesan (after Kesai Eisen)'. Oil on canvas painting by Vincent van Gogh (30 March 1853 - 29 July 1890), 1887. Oiran were the courtesans of Edo period Japan. The oiran were considered a type of 'woman of pleasure' or prostitute. Their art and fashions often set trends among the wealthy and, because of this, cultural aspects of oiran traditions continue to be preserved to this day.

Celebrating the intoxicating and sometimes disorienting dynamism of modern life, Coney Island reveals the painter's knowledge of Italian Futurism, which Stella was exposed to during a trip to Italy and France in 1910-11. Kirchner claimed that the poet Walt Whitman was responsible for my outlook on life” and that Whitman’s sexually charged 1855 poem Leaves of Grass was and still is my comfort and encouragement.” These lines from the poem seem to reflect the atmosphere of his print: I will go to the bank by the wood and become undisguised and naked, I am mad for it to be in contact with me.” E
