Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Iwasa Matabei (Iwasa Matab) Japanese ca. 1640s This diptych of atmospheric ink landscapes does not feature calligraphic inscriptions but is replete with poetic suggestiveness. Though both left and right scrolls appear to be coherent independent compositions, they work together to incorporate visual references to the theme of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, inspired by verses of the poet Song Di (ca. 1015-ca. 1080) about the region around the confluence of the two rivers in the present-day Hunan province. In this rendition, traditional motifs from the eight views have been innovatively compressed into a diptych format.The Eight Views pictorial theme became popular in the late eleventh century in China and was transmitted to Japan in medieval times via imported Chinese paintings. (23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum. Silkworm dated 1859 Ju Chao Chinese Ju Chao left Guangdong to serve as secretary to the official Zhang Jingxiu in Guangxi during the uprisings of the Taiping. After Zhang's retirement in 1856, Ju Chao and his cousin Ju Lian lived at Zhang's celebrated garden estate in Guangdong and taught painting to Zhang's young nephew. In his fifties, Ju Chao returned to his own villa and maintained a quiet life painting and studying Han seals.This tightly drawn depiction of silk moths and of silkworms on mulberry leaves reveals Ju Chao's playful and observant interest in unconventional subjects. Sheet indicates mainly painting material. Able to locate only 3 prints. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
